Applying for a Status of Residence to study in Japan

IMPORTANT: For the time being, foreign nationals even who have the statuses of residence are denied permission to enter Japan. In case that you would be compelled to go back to your home country, please consult the office of the International Affairs Division in advance.

The special measures including suspension of visa and denial of permission to entry are implemented now. Please refer to the following official announcement by Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Strengthening border measures related to novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

(1)For those who are in Japan

?If your residence card will be expired in April, May, June, or July

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan has announced?a special measure that allows, for the time being, foreign residents whose expiration date for their period of stay is due in March, April, May, June,or July to apply for extension until three months after the expiration date. (Link)

If you need to apply for extension, please go to the link(s) below and check the necessary steps. Once you have all the required documents, submit them to the International Affairs Division via email at intl-tua@ml.geidai.ac.jp. Please keep in mind that it takes time to issue the necessary document prepared by the university during the campus closure.

(2)For those who are NOT in Japan

?For students whose period of validity has passed during his/her temporally returning to his/her country

It is required to apply for a Certificate of Eligibility again. Please go to the link below and check the necessary steps. Once you have all the required documents, submit them to the International Affairs Division via email at intl-tua@ml.geidai.ac.jp. Please keep in mind that it takes time to issue the necessary document prepared by the university during the campus closure.

?For students who apply for Student Visa

Now the Japanese government has implemented a policy to suspend visa issuance to prevent the spread of COVID-19 disease (novel Coronavirus). However, if you have a Certificate of Eligibility, please visit the Japanese embassy or consulate-general in your country with your Certificate of Eligibility and apply for a student visa. Be sure to check on the application status with the Japanese embassy or consulate-general after it will be resumed.

The Immigration Services Agency of Japan has announced?a special measure?regarding the period of validity of the certificate of eligibility, to make a?Certificates of Eligibility valid for six months from the date of the entry restriction measures being lifted or until April 30, 2021 whichever comes first.?(Link) If three months have passed since your certificate of eligibility was issued, please contact the office of the International Affairs Division in order to issue the required document before you will visit to the Japanese embassy or consulate-general in your country to apply for a student visa.

?For students who are applying for Student Visa and Certificate of Eligibility

Please find the document explaining immigration procedures for international students from the envelope sent for those admitted to the university. Applications for a visa and a certificate of eligibility are still accepted although the Japanese government has implemented a policy to suspend visa issuance, so please read through the document and?take the necessary steps. Be sure to check on the application status with the Japanese embassy or consulate-general after it will be resumed.
